Breakout Boxes - $1,500This grant provided 12 sets of these hands-on learning tools to enhance classroom engagement while developing knowledge, thinking and communication skills. Imagine students “learning by doing” as they engage in fun escape room-type challenges to unlock and understand complex material!
“Black Cow" Relaunch ~ $1,300The grant funded the printing of 1,000 copies of the Academy’s acclaimed student newspaper for the entire Westlake community. Imagine the informed readership – and proud reporters! – at having a school tradition relaunched!
Formative Loop PYP Math Fluency Program ~ $600This grant supported a math practice program that automatically differentiates for early PYP students to develop math fluency while allowing teachers to effectively accelerate or intervene as needed. Imagine the growing confidence of our youngest learners as they work at their own pace to apply math concepts with greater understanding, accuracy and speed!
Xylophones & Strings Resources ~ $10,238This grant provided music instruments for students to develop and demonstrate their abilities and creativity. Imagine students playing in class performances, enjoying and discovering their own musical talents!
Strapless Heart Rate Monitor System ~ $4,000This grant allows PE students to receive feedback on their exercise effort, fitness levels and heart health in real time. Imagine the lasting impact for kiddos to learn how to gauge their physical activity for a lifetime of healthy living!
K through Grade 8 Leveled Readers ~ $18,100This grant provided 770 fiction, non-fiction and Spanish titles totaling 4,620 new books to enrich the Kindergarten through G8 leveled reading program, a literacy strategy of practicing successful reading behaviors. Imagine how students’ knowledge and appreciation for reading will grow with such an expanded selection!
2018 International Student Leadership Symposium ~ $10,000This grant supported Westlake Academy as it hosted students from eight countries to collaborate and discuss the topic, “Ethics Gone Viral” within a business and global context. Imagine the friendships made and ideas generated as students participated in week-long activities related to social media and ethical leadership.
SumBlox ~ $3,600This grant provided 12 sets of wooden, numeral-shaped blocks with lesson plans that guide students to a deeper understanding of math properties. Imagine using the power of play to spark students’ natural curiosity to explore how numbers work!
WA Faculty Professional Development ~ $11,275Five professional development grants supported eight teachers in their attendance at conferences geared to their academic disciplines. What great examples of life-long learners!

Sansone-Colby Math & Science Plaza ~ $175,000This 2017 Westlake Baja initiative helped the Academy to significantly expand its outdoor learning space with the construction of a dedicated hands-on math and science plaza. Teachers and students from all grade levels will be able to explore and deepen their understanding of physics, geometry, astronomy, algebra and more!
Keller Police Department Substation ~ $25,000This 2018 Gallery Night project underwrote the repurposing of existing Academy space into the Keller Police Department Substation. Renovations included new paint, carpet and ceiling, desks, docking station, gun safe and secure card reader. Reserved parking signage has also been installed. The KPD Substation opened in April 2018.
PYP Science Lab ~ $20,000This 2018 Gallery Night project will repurpose two G3 classrooms into a new PYP Science Lab with appropriately sized furniture, equipment and reference materials all stored in one, easily accessible space. K-G5 students will soon have a dedicated lab to conduct basic science and hands-on STEM activities as part of Westlake’s inquiry-based learning.
STEAM Resource Room ~ $45,000This 2018 Gallery Night project will transform the overflow classroom near the Performance Hall into the STEAM Resource Room to provide an engaging, interdisciplinary and real-world study of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Physics, design, robotics and more will be examined in one space, allowing students to think creatively and critically and to design solutions for the 21st century.
DrumFIT ~ $3,763This Quinn Fund grant provided PE teachers with the innovative DrumFIT equipment and curriculum, which uses music, exercise balls and drumsticks to build strength and endurance, promote social learning and improve coordination. What a fun, exciting way for students of all physical abilities to exercise!
The Foundation is pleased to manage the Gingy M. Quinn Teacher Endowment Fund. Spring Production of “Seussical" ~ $1,000This Quinn Fund grant helped our G6-G12 musical theater students build set pieces and produce marketing materials for their spring production of “Seussical.” What a wonderful way to support our risk-taking students as they explore their creativity on the stage!

PYP STEAM Night Project ~ $1,100This Quinn Fund grant provided t-shirts designed with a Pythagorean spiral for students to decorate and wear as part of the PYP STEAM Night on April 19. What a fun way to combine math and art!

Sporting our colors and “Hammer” logo, imagine the school pride that our students feel arriving in their very own Blacksmiths bus!
